Filtering facepiece respirators (FFR), which are also called disposable respirators, are subject to
various regulatory standards around the world (see examples below). Certain required physical
properties and performance characteristics are specified in order for respirators to claim
compliance with the particular standard. N95/KN95/FFP2 respirators are commonly
recommended by health authorities during pandemic or emergency situations. They are not
exactly the same, but respirators certified as meeting these standards can be expected to function
very similar to on another.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is a main source of protection for emergency and recovery workers. Depending on the type of emergency which may include flooding, hurricanes, fire, electricity, structural collapse, falls, terrorism, earthquakes, tornadoes, extreme temperatures, diseases, among others. It is necessary to protect emergency response and recovery workers from physical, chemical and biological hazards. Routes of exposure include inhalation, dermal contact, ingestion or contact through mucous membranes. Therefore, main protective equipment includes respirators, eye protection, hearing protection and protective clothing. Depending on the hazard, the recommendations on the use of PPE change. Some examples of PPE may include Gas masks, gloves, overalls, boots, and googles.
Now more than ever, PPE has become essential in the fight to address the growing risk of exposure to splash, droplet and airborne pathogens we cannot see.
In this new environment, the dangers don’t discriminate by job or workplace or destination. Solutions that were once designed for certain workers like healthcare professionals, first responders, construction and manufacturing employees are now essential for everyone.
Having the right safety solutions allows us to adapt to our new normal, get back to work and start reshaping the future as we know it — together.
Because now, we all share the responsibility to protect others by protecting ourselves.
